Question

How do I start looking into an adult ADHD assessment in Scotland?

Scotland does not have one standard ADHD assessment pathway, so generic UK or England advice can give the wrong access route.

Current understanding

NHS inform says there is no standard approach to ADHD assessment across Scotland and the process depends on the NHS health-board area. An adult who thinks ADHD may be negatively affecting their life can speak to their GP practice about concerns and next steps. There is no single checklist that confirms ADHD; assessment needs to consider symptoms, impact and other possible explanations. NHS inform also advises checking before paying for a private assessment whether the local health board and GP practice will accept it, because they may not provide treatment on the basis of a private report. Diagnosis, medication, prescribing and shared care remain separate decisions. England Right to Choose does not apply in Scotland.
