How do I start looking into an adult ADHD assessment in Wales?
Adult ADHD services in Wales are not yet evidenced as one uniform national access pathway, so England-specific choice rules or one health board's referral process would be misleading if generalised.
Scope before you act
Wales This scope signal is derived from the governed question wording for orientation only. It is not an eligibility, legal or clinical determination.
Current understanding
Welsh Government's 2026–27 Neurodivergence Improvement Programme says an adult ADHD task-and-finish group is developing options to improve services, including work related to shared care. Current operational pathways remain health-board specific. For example, Hywel Dda currently describes a professional-referral route, usually through a GP, for adults in its catchment; that is a local example and not a Wales-wide rule. NICE NG87 provides professional diagnostic standards in England and Wales: diagnosis should be made by an appropriately qualified specialist following a full assessment rather than a checklist alone. Diagnosis, medication, titration, prescribing and shared care are separate decisions. England Right to Choose does not apply in Wales.

What evidence is still needed
- Current adult ADHD referral, waiting, private-report acceptance, prescribing/shared-care and post-diagnostic support evidence for every Welsh health board.
- Outcome of the Welsh adult ADHD task-and-finish work and any resulting national pathway.
Where people may disagree
- People can have substantial ADHD-like or executive-function difficulties without meeting diagnostic criteria; access to appropriate support should not be reduced to diagnostic status alone.
When this answer should be revisited
- Welsh Government or NHS Wales publishes a national adult ADHD pathway.
- NICE NG87 materially changes.
- Health-board referral or shared-care arrangements materially change.
