Question
Can I look for peer support while I am waiting for, considering or unable to get a formal neurodevelopmental assessment?
Long waits and uneven assessment access can leave people isolated, but community eligibility rules differ.
Current understanding
Check each group's eligibility. Some communities welcome self-identifying or questioning people; others require a diagnosis, referral, membership or programme eligibility. Joining a peer group does not diagnose you, and peer agreement cannot substitute for a clinical assessment where diagnosis is needed.

What evidence is still needed
- Comparable eligibility data for UK peer groups, including self-identifying and awaiting-assessment access.
- Evidence on support needs during neurodevelopmental assessment waits.
Where people may disagree
- Some people do not want a formal diagnosis and may still value community; eligibility should be reported rather than moralised.
When this answer should be revisited
- A reviewed group changes eligibility.
- Assessment pathways materially change access to post- or pre-diagnostic community support.
