Question

How do I seek an autism assessment for a child or young person in England?

Families can be sent between school, GP and local neurodevelopmental services, and support needs should not disappear while a child is waiting for a diagnostic decision.

Current understanding

The NHS says a GP can explain the local autism-assessment route; for children, school may need to make the referral and a health visitor may be involved for a child who is not school age. Assessment can involve developmental and medical history, observation, information from nursery/school and people who know the child, and consideration of other conditions. NICE CG128 describes a broad diagnostic assessment that also builds a profile of strengths and needs. Waiting can be months or longer, and NHS guidance says families can ask what support is available while waiting or if referral is not obtained. If there is disagreement with an outcome, the NHS describes asking the GP or assessment team about another team/second opinion. In England, Right to Choose may apply to an eligible NHS assessment. Educational/SEND support is a separate needs-and-law question and is not automatically conditional on a formal autism diagnosis.
