Question

What happens after an autism or ADHD assessment in the UK?

An assessment can end with diagnosis, no diagnosis, another explanation or a need for more information; the useful next step depends on the actual report, needs and local service rather than the label alone.

Current understanding

After assessment, ask for and keep the written outcome/report and check what it says about strengths, needs, diagnosis or no diagnosis, co-occurring/differential issues, recommendations and follow-up. Public services may offer a follow-up appointment, information, signposting or another referral, but the amount and type of post-diagnostic support varies by nation and local service. A no-diagnosis outcome does not mean that described difficulties or support needs are unreal; the report may identify another explanation or recommend other routes. For ADHD, any medication discussion, titration, prescribing or GP shared-care arrangement is a later clinical pathway and is not guaranteed by diagnosis alone. For autism, workplace, education, healthcare-access and practical-support questions remain separate eligibility/needs questions. If the report contains factual errors or the person disagrees with the clinical conclusion, use the relevant review/correction route rather than treating ND Oracle as an appeal decision-maker.
