Question

What support can I look for while waiting for an autism or ADHD assessment in the UK?

Assessment waits can be long, but many practical, educational, workplace and healthcare needs exist before a diagnostic decision and should not be treated as suspended until diagnosis.

Current understanding

Waiting for assessment is not the same as having no support route. NHS England autism pathway guidance explicitly describes pre-assessment support based on identified needs, and the NHS child ADHD page says support at home and school should continue while waiting. Across the UK, exact services differ, but existing ND Oracle routes can be inspected for workplace adjustments, healthcare communication/access, education support, task organisation, sensory needs and peer/information support without treating those routes as a substitute for clinical assessment. Some specific schemes have their own eligibility rules, so ND Oracle must not promise access merely because a person is awaiting assessment. If distress or risk becomes urgent, the appropriate urgent health/mental-health route is separate from the routine neurodevelopmental waiting list.
