What should I check before paying for a private autism or ADHD assessment in the UK?
A private report, public-service recognition of that report, medication/prescribing, workplace or education use and post-diagnostic follow-up are different questions; paying for assessment does not guarantee all of them.
Current understanding
There is no single UK rule saying that every NHS/HSC service, GP, school, university or employer must treat every private neurodevelopmental report in the same way. Before paying, check the assessor's relevant professional qualifications and diagnostic expertise, what the full assessment includes, whether developmental and cross-setting evidence will be considered where appropriate, what report and follow-up are included, the full cost, and—crucially—whether the NHS health board/HSC Trust/local service or GP you expect to use afterwards will accept or act on the report. Scotland's NHS inform explicitly warns that a health board or GP may not accept a private ADHD assessment. nidirect advises checking Trust acceptance before private autism assessment in Northern Ireland. Cardiff and Vale publishes its own NICE-based private-autism report requirements, which are local rather than a Wales-wide guarantee. In England, an NHS-funded Right to Choose referral is not the same as purchasing a private assessment. For ADHD, diagnosis, medication initiation, titration, prescribing and GP shared care are separate decisions. ND Oracle does not maintain an approved-provider list.

What evidence is still needed
- Current nation and local-service private-report acceptance policies for autism and ADHD, especially adult ADHD prescribing/shared-care consequences.
- Professional-regulator guidance that can support a stable UK-wide assessor-quality checklist without turning it into provider endorsement.
Where people may disagree
- A clinically well-conducted private assessment can still encounter administrative or commissioning barriers; acceptance by one service is not proof of universal acceptance or of clinical quality elsewhere.
When this answer should be revisited
- National or local public-service rules on private neurodevelopmental assessment recognition materially change.
- Professional regulatory or NICE diagnostic standards materially change.
