Scope before you act

Northern Ireland This scope signal is derived from the governed question wording for orientation only. It is not an eligibility, legal or clinical determination.

Current understanding

nidirect says parents/carers concerned about a child's development or possible autism can speak to the GP, health visitor, another health professional or school SENCO about referral. Assessment is carried out by autism specialists in the local HSC Trust area and gathers early-development, family/medical, observation and professional information. Waiting times vary between Trusts and age groups. For private assessment, nidirect advises checking Trust acceptance of the provider's report and what follow-up support exists before paying. England Right to Choose does not apply. School/SEN support and clinical diagnosis are separate questions and should not be silently made dependent on one another.
